"Cultivated Upcycling: Reimagining Waste as a Cultural and Valuable Resource" Aims to explore how upcycling can integrate cultural values to promote reuse. The project prioritizes the utilization of local resources and waste minimization to encourage Upcycling of building components, foster community engagement, and celebrate diversity. Cultivated Upcycling intends to demonstrate Upcycling's potential in preserving environmental resources and generating social benefits for local communities.
Denmark takes the lead in waste generation, surpassing the EU average by an alarming 342 kg per person each year. The construction industry plays a significant role, utilizing 54% of the waste for backfilling purposes, while the remaining portion undergoes reprocessing.
The proposal transform an obsolete DSB train workshop located in the Railway District, south of Copenhagen Municipality, into an Upcycling Center. This center is strategically positioned at the intersection of culture and logistics. The Cultivated Upcycling facility would serve as a re-manufacturing center, reintroducing reused materials to the market. By prominently locating the project within the city, it can effectively play a central role in the existing market, waste management and through public engagement serve as a workplace that anticipates future climate actions.
The logistic spatial development prioritizes the utilization of upcycled materials from existing structures in its design. It encompasses essential functions and machinery for the purposes of treatment, sorting, re-manufacture and packing.
Public interaction is facilitated through a connection to the cultural route, offering observation, networking, and educational opportunities. The Walk Above Path is designed with Upcycled train tracks connected to existing skylights.
