CAFÉ LOGGIA | Redesign of The Glyptotek's Café
In 1897, Carl and Ottilia Jacobsen founded the museum Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek with the intent of creating a cultural oasis and “temple of beauty” for its visitors. The museum's architecture presents an untapped opportunity to redesign the current café to complement the building's architectural styles and to enable visitors to fully experience the oasis which the Jacobsens had envisioned.
Two parts of the museum were built during the Golden Age of continental Europe’s history, the “Belle Époque”, a period in which coffeehouse culture also flourished. Therefore, a design resonating with cafés of that era seemed very fitting for The Glyptotek.
The selection of materials reflects those already used in the building, chosen for their durability, tactile qualities, and aesthetic sustainability. The colour scheme was chosen to match the serene atmosphere of the surroundings and ensure a seamless transition between the bright winter garden and the darker, more colorful exhibition areas.
Traditional coffeehouse elements have been integrated, including a banquette, Thonet chairs, marble tables, mirrors, and opaque glass lighting. Additionally, the inclusion of a statue and plants helps to bring the museum's surroundings into the café environment, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for visitors.
