Biocomposite materials presents an ecological alternative to conventional building materials, with potential to reduce waste and pollution. This project speculates the architectural consequences of designing with such materials. Exploring innovative use of local bioresources in the Faroe Islands as well as an uncharted paradigm of architecture that is not based on permanence and solidity.

Preliminary fieldwork project with prototype testing the performance of bioplastics and further investigation of locally available resources for ecological material production. The bioplastic samples were strong but became fragile under the rain, which led to the interest of investigating the theme of entropy and the potentials of decay in architecture .

BioWear: Crafting with BioTextile on the Faroe Islands
Material explorations, examining aesthetics, spatiality and craft potentials of biocomposite materials. Hand held syringe extrusion on hand drawn guides. Exploring an analogue approach in this highly digitalised realm of future material experiments.
From the material study, derived the concept of layering space frames formed by catenary arches and degradation process of the building can be controlled by scheduled maintenance of these layers. Speculating that in the future we can use a hand-held 3D printing device to build the material with.
Typical construction sequence showing spaces of longer life span with an internal scaffold that encourages regular maintenance.
