Health Information Design

Status

Health information design is a crucial facet of conveying essential health information to patients, and its significance has grown as public health agencies, companies, and various organizations increasingly employ visualizations to impart critical health knowledge.

Unfortunately, the design of medicinal information in leaflets and labels often falls short of meeting patient’s needs, leading to potential medication errors and adverse outcomes.

This issue is further compounded by the increasing responsibility placed on individuals for managing their own medication, and many patients struggle to comprehend medical information due to factors like mental state and complex terminology.

These challenges are even more pronounced in specific demographic groups, such as the global aging population. As a result, organizations and their designers must acquire the requisite expertise for designing visual materials that effectively convey their intended messages. 

Our research focuses on improving health information design, with a particular emphasis on legibility and accessibility of medical information, including medicine packaging and pharmaceutical pictograms. We combine perception psychology and information design to test various visualizations of medical information. Our approach involves manipulating factors like shape, size, stroke and spacing to identify features that enhance legibility.
