The New Wave in Danish Architecture

The first comprehensive framing and treatment of the most important new development in Danish architecture of the 2000s.

The pragmatic turn in Danish architecture in the 2000s is one of the most striking new trends in international architecture in the past decade, and it has attracted considerable interest around the world.
The architectural firms represented in the book include BIG, jds, Cobe, Transform, Nord, Effekt, Adept, among others. Although these firms do not easily fit into one single category or can be said to make up a unified movement, their projects do have certain significant features in common. These commonalities have led international media to view these projects as part of a common trend and a new phenomenon in Danish architecture.

Greenland Revisited

‘Greenland revisited’ provides a comprehensive reassessment of the mostly residential buildings that were constructed by the Danish state agency Greenland Technological Institute (GTO), most of them in the 1960s. It also contains reflections on the lessons learned, on colonialism versus good intentions and on universal versus specific ideals and values.

The book portrays the breathtaking natural landscapes of Ilulissat Ice Fiord and Nuuk Fiord and outlines some of the threats against their natural splendor. It also features articles about two of the finest design manifestations of Greenlandic culture: the kayak and the women’s national costume.

Hvad tænker arkitekten på?

What do architects think about the conditions facing architecture in Denmark right now? And what do they believe in? – The Holy Spirit of Inspiration, beauty, consistency, social equality, objectivity, sensuosity, fun and games, absolution – or eternal architectural life?

Ten leading Danish architects share their thoughts in this book, speaking about what drives their work and what sometimes drives them to distraction in the complex process from idea to building. Why they wanted to be architects, how they came to be architects, and what it actually feels like to be an architect.

Interviews with Jens Thomas Arnfred, Louis Becker, Lars Juel Thiis, Lene Tranberg, Michael Christensen, Stig L. Andersson, Dan Stubbergaard, Kristine Jensen, Dorte Mandrup and Bjarke Ingels.

Only Danish edition. Published in 2015 by Arkitektens Forlag.
