Waste Wood Canopy

Studying sustainable architectural practices.

On the exhibition '70 % Less CO2' you can explore the project 'Waste Wood Canopy'.

This project discusses the potential of a more sustainable use of resources. It explores the re-using of wood in a load-bearing structure by studying the opportunities for and challenges to building with reclaimed wood.

Waste Wood Canopy shows how architecture could contribute to more sustainable practices by building with what we currently consider waste, by using short second-hand wood elements based on Reciprocal Frame geometry and by prolonging the service life of the materials used.

The project aims to understand how the material’s imperfections can provide new ways of conceptualising and designing architecture whereby the materials become active agents. It does so by striking a balance between structural behaviour, aesthetics, functionality, and buildability, and addressing these issues holistically by using high-end digital tools, fabrication and hands-on 1:1 crafting methods.
