The project explores alternatives to today's generic development pattern of post industrial interim communities. Through building on the existing premises in an interim area in Malmö, the goal is to form a strategy where all actors involved can recognize their intentions in the development. An interactive steering process is utilized to cherish the unique identity and to enhance social capital.

Malmö is often associated with two very different images. On one side the stigmatized areas, narrated as no-go zones with poverty and alienation. In contrast to that, is the cosmopolitan cultural city, filled with creatives and entrepreneurs. A party city with a diverse locally produced art and music scene.

Norra Grängesbergs street is in the heart of these two polarized images, both metaphorically and literally. A space pulsating with diversity, freedom and creativity.

To understand what future this area is facing, the local actors intentions and the affect they have on the physical space was mapped out. Resulting in a negotiation map displaying the various directions and conflicts.

I propose to work after a winwinwin strategy where all the actors could recognize their intentions in the development. That would secure the social capital afforded by the interim period.

Small changes make big differences. Through the collaborations between the local actors, the area will do what it does best. It will adapt to, change and challenge the future. The interim does not have to be a static period but can possible become a viable tool in the development of this, and other similar areas.

Through compromises and trade-offs the area will develop through small interventions rather than through big regeneration projects

Secondary connections will strengthen the different activities in the area. Certain locations in the area will also be highlighted by strategic greenery. Marking entrances or functioning as soft barriers.
