The left-behind children and elderly are children and older people who remain in rural regions of China while the rest of the family members leave to work in urban areas. ‘Home of the Left-Behind’ is a project that focuses on the left-behind population in rural areas of China. It creates spaces to gather them together and be accompanied by each other to start a new community life.

‘Home of the Left-Behind’ community house is located in Tuochuan village of Jiangxi province where the majority left-behind population has existed, and Hui-Style vernacular buildings characterize the village. The site has a piece of vernacular house ruin which used to be the house of family Yu from 19th century until they left to the urban areas. Instead of bringing a brand-new design typology to the context, this project focuses more about how to transform and integrate the Hui-Style vernacular architectural elements to fit in the nowadays countryside life of the left-behind elderly and children.
