Fungateria is an international research project involving 7 academic partners. The project is coordinated by Professor Phil Ayres at the Royal Danish Academy.

The project focuses on bringing mycelium-based materials into an “Engineered Living Materials” (ELMs) context. ELMs comprise living cells that remain biologically active in use-cases, thereby offering radically new tailored functionalities over non-living materials, for example: self-regulation, adaption to environmental cues and self-organization across hierarchies of scale and structure.

The project focuses on:

  • Developing a portfolio of ELMs using a co-cultivation process employing mycelium and bacteria.
  • Developing a modular and generic ELM manufacturing platform.
  • Probing the emerging ethical, social and environmental issues for ELM technologies.

The project is funded by the EU under the EIC Pathfinder programme and runs from 2022-2026.
