Renew is a material study of textile waste. The project responds to the 2022 implementation of textile waste collection in Denmark, by investigating the potentials of recycling wool using green chemistry in a cross-disciplinary collaboration between biological- and chemical engineering, and design. Renew explores the transformation from wool waste to fibres and form through material innovation.

Polymer recycling of wool: The diagram shows the process of using ionic liquid as a dissolving agent to recycle wool. It is based on theoretical knowledge and on my experiences from initial experiments working with the solvent. It also presents the two explorative directions of the project: Fibre to fibre and fibre to form. The online exhibition showcase fibre to form.
How can the pulp from dissolved wool and wool blends be reshaped into new materials? A collection of hard, flexible and foam-like materials was developed.

Proposing a future application: Marble wool boards utilized in furniture design.
Proposing a future application: Marble wool can be molded into objects.
Fibre to form: Material display of fibre to form experiments. Different samples of wool waste dissolved into pulp and pressed. The material is hard and lightweight. It can be sanded to obtain a smooth surface.
The project’s technical aspects were supported by extern consultant and textile biologist Birgit Bonefeld from Aarhus University. Working cross-disciplinary contribute to a strategic and holistic project approach.

Growing - Mature Human Life
