The proposal investigates how to challenge the existing typology of the current National Museum in the Faroe Islands, and how a new National museum can transform the industrial part of the harbour to a publicly active space, seeking alternative ways to mediate history and culture through architecture.

The Exhibition Space: The exhibition space with a big window at the end, framing the city, allowing the user to experience the curated exhibition with Torshavn as a backdrop.
The Archive as a Lantern on the Pier: Even on the most miserable day, this glowing route offers protected exploration of uncurated history. When stepping into the nooks, what was translucent becomes transparent, allowing you to investigate the items even further.
The Dark Archive: All artefacts which are light sensitive are placed in the subterranian wing on the west side of the building. This space is curated by light, or lack thereof, instead of full exposure. You can enter this archive as well, coming into this dark forest of light-shy items of the past having low light reveal items as you walk through.
Descriptive plans of the project, with zoom-ins and descriptions of each function of the building.

Master of Architecture, The Royal Danish Academy, Architecture and Extreme Environments

Architectural design needs to make a difference. Through a site-specific approach, this Master programme aims to respond to present and future global challenges through research by design, fine-tuned site specific strategies and active fieldwork to remote world locations where 1:1 architectural prototypes are put to the test to inform and innovate building design at home and abroad.

We mediate our presence in our environment via design and technology, often disregarding environmental impact. It is our intention in this programme to investigate the artistic potential of working with technology not only as a performance orientated design parameter, but also as a process charged with aesthetic potential and cultural implications with sustainable aims, from building scale all the way to detail.

Changing the area of study yearly, the programme has engaged so far in the following contexts: The Arctic (Iceland, Svalbard and Greenland), The Amazon, The Gobi (China), Tanzania, Alaska, The Atacama (Chile) and the Faroe Islands.

Architecture and Extreme Environments engages actively with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in the teaching strategy.
