RE:TEX
Could felting help solve the global textile-waste crisis?
On the exhibition '70 % Less CO2' you can explore the project 'RE:TEX':
Every week tonnes of donated clothes are shipped to Africa from Western countries, and in Ghana 40% of the donated clothing ends up in unregulated landfills, polluting the environment.
The RE:TEX project aims to reduce the environmental footprint of donated clothes by recycling textile waste and creating a new sustainable textile through the process of felting.
The felting technique tears fibres apart and reassembles them into a virgin material to improve overall quality. The technique is easy to implement and accessible to produce locally in Ghana. A series of video manuals guides Ghanian artisans through the felting process so they can produce these textiles themselves.
The finished RE:TEX textiles are made of 50% organic cotton and 50% textile waste.
