This exhibition is the result of the competition “From waste to resource”, arranged by Laboratory for Innovation and Creativity Denmark (LINKED).

In this competition design- and architecture students have designed new waste sorting systems, possible to implement at the school and in rest of Copenhagen.
The competition was in collaboration with both IKEA, Marius Pedersen, Dansk Affaldsforening, Kommunernes Landsforening and Dansk Retursystem, and the exhibited items are the participants’ final proposals.

Today, waste is sorted and recycled to varying degrees around Denmark - and in some places not at all. Systems also differs depending on whether we are at home, at work or in public space. Ultimately, this means that too much waste is not recycled and ends up being incinerated and emitting vast amounts of CO2.

Therefore, the Danish government has put forward new regulations that aims to streamline waste sorting nationally across municipalities, streamline waste sorting for both public and.private consumers, divide everyday waste into 10 main categories and use common waste pictograms across all platforms.

Our current waste sorting systems (or lack of same) are not fit for these initiatives, which call for great design thinking and smart solutions – a competition.

The competition participants have been challenged to design a new, sustainable solution for a waste sorting system. They have been asked to fit it into a standard kitchen, but preferably also make it scalable, so it is possible to implement around the country.
The goal is to affect both how we locally at The Royal Danish Academy sort our waste, but also to push Denmark in a more sustainable direction at a national scale, by offering innovative solutions to a waste sorting system.

LINKED is a project group at the school aiming to create and enhance bonds between education, research and businesses through activities and initiatives, that focusses on supporting and developing a more sustainable future.
