Call for applications: Conserving Canvas: Treatment of canvas paintings supports – current practises

Participants
The workshop will be limited to 12 participants and is targeted at mid-careers conservators working for museums, curators, collection managers, and educators on the conservation of canvas paintings. Applicants should preferably have a role in decision-making regarding structural conservation of paintings on canvas in their collection.
Workshop Content
The workshop will provide the participant with an insight into past and present materials and methods for canvas paintings conservation (such as tear mending, lining, and backing), and an understanding of how conservation materials and methods can change paintings’ sensibility to the ambient climate. The goal of the workshop is to prepare the participants for informed decision-making on active and preventive conservation of canvas paintings that are either untreated or have already been treated.
The workshop will offer 10 days of intensive theoretical and experimental learning by international experts in the field of structural paintings conservation and preventive conservation.
Lectures will include:
- Hands-on conservation treatments of canvas paintings through demonstrations and exercises.
- Mechanical, chemical, and dimensional properties of materials and techniques.
- Long-term effects of conservation treatments and environment on canvas paintings.
- The knowledge will be discussed within the relevant context provided by the participants.
Workshop working language will be English with simultaneous translation to and from Spanish. The participation of professionals from Spanish speaking countries is very much encouraged.
Applications should include: 1) a 1-page letter of motivation – including a description of the applicants’ experience within structural treatments of canvas paintings – 2) a CV of max. 3 pages with relevant affiliations and aspects of training, and 3) if possible, a recommendation letter, max. 1 page.
Expenses for travel, accommodation and course are covered by the grant.
