This is a game without a story. However, the story is created by you, in collaboration with artificial intelligence.

Video games are restrictive, relying on predefined structures of script trees and logic to generate narratives. This is perpetuated by our very game design principles such as iterative design, in which we aim to align our expectation of gameplay with the behavior of the player.

My project specifically challenges these restrictive and (hetero)normative conventions prevalent in the design of video game narratives.

one room apartment introduces Large Language Models as a potential tool for queer game design by empowering players to insert themselves in any virtual, interactive environment, facilitating flexible and adaptive play experiences.

one room apartment - Teaser

The game puts you in a one-room apartment, containing 12 interactable objects. With varying levels of agency for each object, you are co-creating the narrative of the game with ChatGPT, who is informed about the context of the game, as well as your individual player decisions.

After three interactions per day, the character is tasked to go to bed, for which the LLM starts creating and narrating a dream based on the decision made throughout the day. This also leads to ChatGPT manipulating both the soundscape as well as the lighting of the environment, displaying preliminary explorations of LLMs not just as a text-generating tool, but also as an environmental game design agent.

The sound was created by Marta Bo.

Publication "ChatGPT - The Future of Queer Play?"

This paper was accepted to DiGRA 2024.

The paper explores ChatGPT as an avenue to explore new playgrounds for queer play — player behavior which subverts game systems and objectives to meet queer desires. Categorizing queer play into two distinct natures — invasive and non-invasive, the study delves into how queer gamers have ingeniously reacted to heteronormative game systems. In response to this tension, the paper investigates: Are Large Language Models able to solve the conflict between restrictive game structures and queer player desires?

To assess the performance of ChatGPT as a facilitator of queer play, I developed a game prototype where players engaged in open dialogues with NPCs linked to ChatGPT. Players completed a short questionnaire. The findings show that ChatGPT can indeed facilitate queer play. Moreover, players engaging in queer play experienced a greater sense of autonomy. Queer play, however, did not heavily affect the overall player experience. Finally, the paper calls for an embrace of Large Language Models as a promising tool to queer games and encourage queer play.
