OptiFibre

Project period
2025-2026

Recycling of textiles is a circular process that requires new knowledge and new methods at every stage. From municipal textile collection to sorting, shredding and the production of high quality, long lasting yarns.

By generating new knowledge about the different textile fractions, from the politically regulated collection system to the design of durable materials made with recycled fibres the project aims to optimise the fractions suitable for recycling. It also aims to create added value in the fractions that prove unsuitable for mechanical or chemical recycling, by identifying where in the value chain these fibres may be better utilised.

The ambition of the project is therefore to optimise the recycling potential of all fibre fractions within the circular process.

To make full use of the collected textile streams, new knowledge, new methods and stronger collaboration between designers, engineers, researchers and industry are needed. OptiFibre provides a shared framework for this development, bringing partners together around a central ambition: to improve the spinnability of shredded fibres so that high quality yarns and woven or knitted fabrics can be produced and used for a long time. This is essential for both the green transition and the competitiveness of the Danish textile sector.

OptiFibre aims to strengthen collaboration among key Danish actors in textile recycling and contribute to positioning Denmark as a leader in circular textile innovation.

The consortium includes VIA University College (lead), the Royal Danish Academy (RDA), Kolding School of Design (DSKD), Danish Technological School (DTI), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Erhvervsakademi København (EK), and New Retex.

The project is funded by Fabrikant Christian Frederik Madsens Fond.
