The lecture ‘Typological Uncertainty’ is given by the Zürich based architects Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan. The lecture is part of the lecture series ‘The Complex Interior’.
Lütjens Padmanabhan Architects was established by Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan in 2007. Their recent work ranges from innovative housing in Switzerland to international projects such as the residences for the Swiss ambassadors in Algeria and in Colombia.
Despite their love for a more refined, urbane architecture, Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan have light-heartedly embraced the fact that most of their commissions are set in the mundane anonymity of suburbia. Their interest in complex architectural expression has distanced the practice from the craft-oriented mainstream of Swiss architecture. The current projects explore the impossible task of reconciling the autonomy of the exterior facade with the typological uncertainty of interior spaces and loose urban contexts.
After teaching assignments at ETH Zürich, TU Munich and EPF Lausanne Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanbhan were teaching in 2020 at Harvard GSD.
Lecture Series: The complex interior
'The complex interior' is organized by the master programme Spatial Design, the PhD School and The Royal Danish Academy - Center for Interior Studies. 'The Complex Interior' addresses the interior as a multi-layered phenomenon present at and in various scales, sensations and situations, and discusses the interior across disciplines involving anthropologists, design historians and practising architects. Each lecture will be followed by an online discussion.
