Fornebu is located in Bærum municipality, just outside the border of Oslo. Between 1939-98 the area was the main airport for the capitol. Since the 1990s, there has been a discussion between Bærum, Oslo and the state about how the old airport area should be transformed. This has resulted in a mixed housing development where villas and head offices are now located side by side.
Fornebu as a place consists of several contrasts and can be experienced close and deserted at the same time. Between older villa buildings, a culturally transformed airport and new business buildings, there is a walking area with an eventful coastal landscape. Fornebu is integrated with good cycle routes and a footpath that leads all the way to Oslo city center.
The area's future development is affected by the need to expand the city of Oslo. An expansion of the capital's public transport network has already been initiated, which will be connected to Fornebu.
