Plastic Archives
Can we use our existing building mass to store single-use-plastics as a form of end-of-life-treatment?
The combination of the high CO2 footprint and the extremely short lifespan of packaging plastics makes them one of earths most problematic materials. But by utilizing their unique material properties, packaging plastics can be recycled into cellular-structured building materials, that can be used as partition walls or insulation in transformations and renovations. This prolongs their usable lifespan and can reduce the risk of plastic pollution.
The cellular structure of stretched packaging plastics is both an aesthetic and a technical phenomenon and can change our perspective on this morally charged material. Rethinking plastic waste can possibly turn this problem into a dream.
Circular packaging plastic?
How circular can packaging plastic be? By taking the traditional model for circularity and expanding it into everyone of a material's possible life cycles, we can start to better explain and understand a its circularity.
Foils used for packaging for example can often be recycled once before they lose the qualities we value them for. They however do have the potential to be recycled into something else with a possibly longer lifespan? The Spiral can visualize the many (often unused) potential life cycles of a material and change the way we view them.
