The project is an inhabitation of the vacant water tower in Roskilde. Exploring the site-specific potential of the rare industrial infrastructure. With a focus on emphasizing the spatial qualities, the water tower is reimagined as an experiential garden that magnifies the sensory experiences and emphasises the natural phenomena present on site.

Many former infrastructural buildings stand empty as society evolves. How can we transform these structures in ways that preserve their unique identity and character?

This project begins with the existing building itself, studying its quirks, qualities, and atmosphere, to shape a fitting new program, rather than forcing a predefined function onto it.

Experiential Garden: a space that engages the senses, emotions, and mind of its visitors through immersive, interactive, and multisensory experiences.

The project is a permanent transformation of the inactive water tower in Roskilde, reimagining the former water tank as an experiential garden, and the former restaurant on top as a beacon for the local area, functioning as a public pavilion and viewpoint overlooking Roskilde.
The project focuses on magnifying the rare location and experience found within the water tank and creating a calm public space on top to connect, reflect and simply be.

TRANSFORMATION STRATEGY

Transformation strategy: focusing on emphasizing human experiences in relation to the existing spatial qualities and phenomena present on site.
We believe that we need to examine existing structures with care and a site-specific approach, valuing qualities over quantities. The strategy is divided into four key elements:

INHABITING THE UNINHABITED: Reimagining uninhabited spaces and seeing potential in vacant structures. Domesticating the building, making it more human scale by creating accessible design that emphasizes human dimensions and perception.

SPATIAL QUALITIES: Mapping the potential in the existing structure and the qualities of the phenomena already present on site.

HUMAN EXPERIENCE: With a phenomenological approach, we focus on the senses and how the space is perceived.

FLEXIBILITY: Working intentionally with a permanent transformation that allows the space to change over time in relation to the changes of the seasons, inhabitants, and use.

BEHAVIOROLOGY

VIEW PAVILION: The pavilion rises above the city, offering a sense of privacy and a new point of perspective of the city form above. At its center, a shallow pond invites a pause. You sit at the edge of the pond, watching the horizon shift with the seasons. The roof shelters you, while behind you, rain falls into the water. When the pond fills, it spills through a hidden grate, continuing its journey down to the chamber below you.

SOUND MIRROR Down in the chamber, a curved path leads you through the landscape of limestone. At one point, the path unfolds into a small platform. As you step onto it, voices surrounds you, reflected along the curved wall. You find yourself in an acoustic pocket, where every sound is heightened, every word echoed into clarity. You are experiencing the phenomena of sound mirrior.

REFLECTION The path draws you to the heart of the chamber. Here, the air shifts. It is quieter, denser, touched by the scent of damp stone. Water drips from above, echoing into the dark pool below you. Its surface conceals the depth, distorting space. Boundaries dissolve. Light and surroundings reflect, flicker, disappear

MOON PAVILION Along the curved path, you arrive at the Moon Pavilion. The tilted walkway lifts you to a new height, where the landscape of limestone below shifts in perspective. Overhead, an oculus opens to the sky, a quiet observatory framing the contrast between light and darkness, inside and out.
