Gengmu Ruan

Gengmu Ruan's research focuses on resource-informed timber structures and architecture, exploring how availability and inherent characteristics of wood resources can inform design and construction process. His work also looks at the dynamic relationship between resources, material properties, structural behaviour, construction method, tectonic expression and architectural phenomenon across scales.

Hybrid Wood Species Design is the core concept of an ongoing research project (2025-) where low-density, fast-growing softwood and reclaimed hardwood are integrated. It can take advantage of both, as hardwood contributes strength and stiffness while softwood provides volume and reduced weight. It can also offer greater design adaptability, as hybridisation allows components to be tailored to local wood inhomogeneity and constraints for design and assembly, rather than relying on an industrial concept of material abundance and uniform material characteristics that results in wasteful material processing.

The Phenomenology of Structures (2026-) understands structure not only as a technical system of load-bearing, but also as an important medium of architectural experience. It examines architecture from a broader lens based on phenomenological understanding and combines the focus from abstract force flow to lived perception. Structure is no longer concealed behind finishes, but becomes present and perceptible, shaping how space is experienced through the body and senses.

Timber-Only Structures and Architecture is a doctoral project (2019-2024) that investigates the integration of structural logic, material behaviour, and architectural expression in timber construction. The research explores timber-only systems through material-informed design approaches based on salvaged timber and wooden nail connections, with a focus on the sustainable use of wood resources, low-processing construction methods, and tectonic clarity.
