The Environmental Cost of Digitizing AEC

Increased productivity, improved collaboration, better sustainability: the digitization of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry holds many promises for the sector. But what are the social and environmental realities that lie behind these expectations? I study the consequences of digitizing the construction industry, assessing a range of diverse technologies - AI, BIM, advanced manufacturing, … - through Life-Cycle Assessment, Material Flow Analysis and mapping methods. My main focus is sustainability beyond carbon, exploring the notion of burden shifting and the risk of hidden impacts of digitization.
