Thomas Ryborg Jørgensen

My field of research encompasses architectural theory, the analysis of architectural works - including their broader effects and contextual contributions - as well as artistic research, and art- and creativity-related poetics. It is driven by a persistent preoccupation with the relationships between architectural works, urbanity, landscape, existence, time, and complex holistic formations, exemplified in my extensive book ’VÆRELSER TIL TILVÆRELSER – fra, om og med Bygningskunstens Helhedsdannelser’ [Rooms for Existences – from, about, and with the Holistic Formations of Architecture]. The book’s title defies direct translation into English, as it plays on the intimate connection between space and existence inherent in the Danish terms ’værelse’ (room) and ’tilværelse’ (existence/life). As the title suggests, the book explores and advocates for an existential approach to architecture, prompted by the planetary environmental crisis, but also by the vast, albeit often unstudied and overlooked, historical experiences available to us. These experiences are accessible not merely through the architects’ intentions, but primarily through the lived and evolving lives of the architectural works’, their own temporal ”existences", their extensive involvements and contributions, their tangible effects and consequences at every level, and their associated complex holistic formations. A key point in my book is that we must, to a significant extent, recall and learn from such experiences as we engage with the profound transformation and development that architecture inevitably must undergo, both now and in the future.
