Limhamn's lime quarry is an important part of Malmö's industrial heritage. Today, the quarry is a nature reserve where many rare species live. But the site is still heavily dependent on human activity to keep from being filled with water. The project proposes an alternative experience of the inaccessible quarry in the form of a visitor center that emphasizes the sensory nature of the site.

It has taken approximately 50 years for each millimeter of limestone to form. The quarry's 65 ,eter high limestone walls expose 3 million compressed time in physical form. The limestone, which took the earth over 60 million years to form, human began to break up in the 17th century. In the 19th century, Limhamn's lime quarry became one of the largest opencast quarries in Europe. In 1994 lime was mined for the last time and the quarry was abandoned and left like an open wound in the earth's crust, as an important memory of Malmö's industrial history and as a reminder of man's ability to modify the earth's crust according to her own needs. But it's also a symbol of how nature always finds a way.

“We can think of the world as made up of things. Of substances. Of entities. Of something that is. Or we can think of it as made up of events. Of happenings. Of processes. Of something that occurs. Something that does not last, and that undergoes continual transformation, that is not permanent in time.”  - Carlo Rovelli

I have let the design of the cavities create themselves. In the same way that a flintstone takes on a peculiar shape, I have let my non-hierarchical drawings shape the room. Crabs and other animals that dug tunnels in the seabed, when those tunnels and cavities were abandoned, silicon found its way down and flint was formed to fill the cavity.

The intention was to focus on the bodily experience and the sensory nature of the limestone walls. I wanted the limestone to play the main role in the facility, therefore, I wanted to add as little external materials as possible. This resulted in a visitor center withour insulation or closed covering. The visitor walks alongside the limestone walls under the opensky down to an existing abandoned factory building. Along the way, the visitor is able to experience the quarry in real time through projections and sound installations.
