People of the CTA
THE PEOPLE OF THE CTA
The CTA is the abbreviation for the Chicago Transit Authority, the metropolitan management of the elevated train running through the vast city. When one rides the CTA, as opposed to a private vehicle, one is in contact with people from other areas of the city. Contact which is otherwise systematically averted. This project expands on public transportation space as a public space.
To address an urban border condition in the Southside of Chicago, a hybrid building combining a train station and a vocational school aims to facilitate human contact and relationships between two segregated neighborhoods.
Following a strategic site selection and site analysis on meso and macro scales, the formulated proposal aims to encourage access to public resources and public transportation and to confront the connotations associated with the Southside of Chicago.
Urban Context
The project aims to mitigate a condition of urban segregation with a mixed-use train station/vocational school building located at the strategic location of the 51st Street Green Line train station in Chicago.
Bespoke solution
The intention is to preserve and enhance the existing train structure, which is a feature of architectural heritage to the city. The unique condition of integrating a school with an elevated rail structure required a bespoke solution to sound and vibrations of the train passing every 5 to 20 minutes throughout the day.
User experience
A sequence of spaces in time speculates as to how a user of the train station and a user of the school would experience the spaces throughout the course of one day and potentially make contact with one another.
