A reaction to the interwoven conflict between the creation of FIFA World Cup 2022, in Qatar, and the rug industry of Nepal. Rugs used to be Nepal’s biggest export. Sadly, this craft-based export has been surpassed by the income of cheap migrant labour. These rugs aim to materialise the current debate, remind all involved parties to assert the debate post-World Cup and insist on persistent changes

This rug combines the winning nations of the world cups throughout time into one united rug.
A checked rug made by the colours of the winning match kits – from the first championship won by Uruguay in 1930 to the latest World Cup in 2018 won by France.
The rug emphasises the importance of supporting the World Cup as an international championship without compromising on human rights.

‘To draw a line in the sand’ has been a frequent metaphor in the debate of the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The metaphor expresses the need for action and insists on persistent changes.
This rug materialises the metaphor and underlines the urgency of these matters.

The football field facilitates a peaceful battle between nations. It proves the ability of nations to meet and fight despite differences and controversies. It is a fight where no live are lost.
Sadly, lives have been lost during the construction of stadiums and infrastructure for the World Cup 2022. Over the past 10 years more then 6.500 migrant workers have passed away in work related deaths at the construction sites in Qatar.
This rug manifests the horrifying number of lost lives and stresses the fact that this development must come to an end.
