The Hand in the Machine
The Hand in the Machine investigates whether the 3D printer can become a craft tool rather than a production tool. Most of the objects that surround us today are made by machines we never see, in places we never visit, by processes designed to produce identical copies. Something has been lost in that distance: the variation, the texture, the sense that an object was looked at and cared about as it was being made.
This project takes the opposite position. It treats the 3D printer as an instrument to be developed and engaged with, rather than as a box that executes files. The result is a series of stools produced through close collaboration between the designer and the machine, each one carrying the visible trace of its own making.
The stroke stool
The stroke stool
When we design things today, the act of making is hidden behind layers of software. We draw, we click, we send a file off, and somewhere a machine produces an object that only loosely resembles what we had in mind. The Stroke Stool removes those layers. A gesture drawn on an iPad becomes, directly, the path the printer traces in plastic. The hand and the machine speak the same language, with nothing in between. What you see is a line drawn into space.
The bend stool
The bend stool
The Bend Stool is printed flat and becomes a stool only after the maker has heated it and bent the legs into position by hand. The machine prepares the move. A zone embedded in the toolpath, where the printed lines fan outward, lets the material soften under heat exactly where it should yield. The final form depends on a human gesture, and no two stools are ever bent quite the same.
The fold stool
The fold stool
A flat sheet of plastic, printed in a single piece, folded into a stool by hand. The machine prepares the sheet by leaving precise bend lines, thinner bands of material that soften first when reheated, so the folds land exactly where they should. What the machine cannot do is the folding itself, and what the maker cannot do is the precision of the sheet. The stool is the result of the two doing what each does best, and meeting in between.
