Shared Surfaces - Heritage and Use through Furniture at Flæsketorvet
Shared Surfaces is my thesis project. One that explores how outdoor furniture in diverse public spaces can take part in their narrative. Implementing rather than just placing.
My site was Flæsketorvet in Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District. A heritage rich industrial site that has turned into a social asphalt park. I started with an anthropologic study of the area and its stakeholders to understand who and what I was designing for. This fueled my design process.
The outcome is ’Meet Table’ an outdoor table that tries to translate functionality into components of storytelling. Made in cheap, robust and sustainable materials. The table references Flæsketorvet's contemporary park use in a remixed picnic typology built on structural principles of meat rail systems that defines the area's heritage.
Thus trying to tackle sustainability through site specific relevance by way of creating a feeling of ownership and easy repair in a flat pack design.
The prototype was developed in collaboration with HAUGAARD.
The project has been guided by my mentors Frederik Gustav and in conversation with Meatpacking's District Management.
