Textile Column is a practice-based research project undertaken to explore the decorative and functional aspects of 3D printed clay as a cladding material for structural steel. Influenced by Semper’s ‘Bekleidung’ theory and building on historical and contemporary precedent for ceramics in architecture this project aims to develop hybrid methods for designing when using digital fabrication tools.

As well as the prototype itself, 2 research papers have been produced as a result of this project. The first reporting on the hybrid design method, and the second using an experimental ‘poetic analysis’ as a tool to extract the creative inputs into the project as a form of artistic knowledge.
